DR CAROL YAN

Associate Professor
Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery
University of California San Diego
San Diego, USA

Dr. Carol H. Yan is an Associate Professor of Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery at the University of California, San Diego, and the Veteran Affairs San Diego Healthcare System.

She obtained her Doctorate of Medicine degree at the University of Pennsylvania where she also completed her residency training in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. She subsequently completed a fellowship in rhinology and skull base surgery at Stanford University.

Her clinical and research work focuses on olfactory dysfunction, chronic rhinosinusitis, and sinonasal disease. She is Principal Investigator on an NIH/NIDCD K08 award studying antiviral responses in the olfactory epithelium in post-viral olfactory dysfunction. Her research includes prospective cohort studies, randomized controlled trials, and translational investigations examining mechanisms and therapeutics for smell loss. Her work has contributed significantly to understanding COVID-19–associated olfactory dysfunction, including early identification of smell loss as a key clinical feature and ongoing efforts to define mechanisms of persistent anosmia. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals and contributed to international consensus statements on chronic rhinosinusitis and olfaction.

Dr. Yan serves on the editorial board of the International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology and participates in national professional activities through the American Rhinologic Society, including as Chair of the Research and Grants Committee. She is involved in resident and trainee education and participates in institutional and national committees related to research, quality, and academic affairs.
