DR DIDIER PORTMANN
(11th SARC 2020 Faculty)
Georges Portmann Institute
Didier Portmann is ENT – carrying on a century-long tradition in his family. His great grandfather was Professor Emile Moure, one of the founder of the discipline in 1880. He also founded a specialised journal, the “Revue de Laryngologie Otologie Rhinologie” (European Review of ENT), which is still being published. At that time, Professor Moure started to teach and organize meetings in ENT. His son-in-law (and Didier Portmann’s grandfather), Professor Georges Portmann, has described the surgery of decompression of the endolymphatic sac for Menière’s disease in 1926. Didier Portmann’s father, Professor Michel Portmann, is well-known for his interest in otology and otoneurology. Didier Portmann has followed the steps of his elders with the same passion for teaching.
Since 1993, Dr Didier Portmann has been working in private practice with special focus on otology and neurotology.
In 2004, he succeeded to Dr Guy Lacher as General Secretary of the Georges Portmann Institute, which is devoted to teaching the ENT speciality. Currently, the International President of the Institute is Pr De Yun Wang from Singapore.
For many years, the Georges Portmann Institute (www.institut-portmann.org) has been organising different courses and workshops on all subjects related to the otorhinolaryngology. Presently, three sessions are being held in English yearly. The most sought-after is a course on micro surgery in otology, which is generally organized end of June, beginning of July. This course started in 1958 under the impulse of Professor Michel Portmann. Since 1989, Doctor Didier Portmann has been an active member of the organizing staff, performing diverse surgical demonstrations and lectures, and supervising the temporal laboratory work. Since 2004, he is the Course Director. Each year, a famous practician in the otologic field is invited.
Aside of his activities for the Georges Portmann Institute, Dr Didier Portmann participated, as a special guest, in numerous training courses, lectures, workshops, round tables and surgical demonstrations in France and abroad. In 1998, his father and himself published a book on surgical techniques of the middle ear, entitled Otologic Surgery: Manual of Oto-Surgical Techniques (Singular Publishing Group).
Dr Didier Portmann is also Director and Editor of the “Revue de Laryngologie Otologie Rhinologie” (European Review of ENT), which publishes articles in both French and English. The “Revue de Laryngologie Otologie Rhinologie” is indexed in Medline and available online at www.revue-laryngolgie.com.
